Purple Lupine Flowers Grow Wild at Casco Bay flowering Although a member of the bean family, lupines were imported to North America from the Mediterranean not because of their edibility but because of their ornamental beauty. The seeds of these herbaceous plants are actually poisonous, containing a toxic alkaloid called lupinine. Over two hundred species of lupines exist, and many varieties now grow wild across parts of the U.S and Canada. These flowering purple and pink lupines are in full bloom.
