Burrowing Owls adult male and female at burrow entrance Although they can excavate their own nests or burrows, burrowing owls also borrow burrows abandoned by armadillos, ground squirrels and prairie dogs. These small birds of prey once ranged widely across the western United States and Florida, but they are now threatened or endangered in some of their former range. They have attempted to compensate for habitat loss by nesting in cemeteries, road rights-of-ways, golf courses, and vacant lots.
