Sugar Cane sections awaiting sale to Ecuadorean tourists visiting Banos. Raw sugar cane is a popular snack in the tropical countries where most of it is grown. Sugar cane is one of the primary sources for sucrose or table sugar and molasses. Originally domesticated from wild relatives in southeast asia, sugar in crystalized form was a trade good in India and China 2,500 years ago, reaching Europe in the 8th century AD. Sugar subsidies in the United States are a huge and highly controversial portion of most farm bills. Heavy consumption of refined sugar in western countries is tied to increased rates of obesity and early onset diabetes.
