New Carissa being exploded Grounded Freighter New Carissa exploding, Coos Bay, Noth Spit, USA. You are seeing the combined effects of C4 and napalm exploding holes into the oil compartments. The first attempt did not succeed in holing the tanks and igniting the fuel, so the Navy Seals have used more on their second try. The New Carissa ran aground after setting anchor too close to shore. The ship was empty but was carrying 400 thousand gallons of diesel and bunker fuel. An estimated 40 thousand gallons spilled, and rough weather drove much of the oil onto six miles of sandy beach near the town of North Bend on the Oregon coast.
