Cleaning Up Chesapeake Bay Although the Chesapeake Bay is still one of the most productive estuaries in the world, it is threatened by air and water pollution and the loss of its natural forest and wetland buffers. Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge on the eastern shore of the Bay provides habitat for both resident wildlife and migrating waterfowl like this Tundra Swan. Tundra Swans nest in the Arctic of Canada but migrate to warmer climates in the fall, stopping to rest and feed at Chincoteague and other refuges located on the Atlantic Flyway. Migrating in aggregated family groups of up to a hundred or more birds, these swans winter in areas near the coasts of the United States.
