Nuclear Power Plant cooling towers with steam billowing into a stiff breze. 1992 file photo. The Limerick Nuclear Power Plant was first activated in 1989 and went online for commercial electrical production in January of 1990. PECO operated the 1055 megawatt plant which was constructed by Bechtel. Environmentally, nuclear power has one main advantage over fossil fuels: it emits no greenhouse gases. Fossil fuels are, however, still needed to produce uranium and to transport nuclear wastes. And storage for the highly radioactive solid and liquid wastes remains a problem. Radioctive elements in these wastes can remain dangerously radioactive for thousands of years. Plutonium can also be used for nuclear weapons production so security is a concern as well.
