Fossil fuels are, however, still needed to produce uranium and to transport nuclear wastes. And storage for the highly radioactive solid and liquid wastes remains a problem. Radioctive elements in these wastes can remain dangerously radioactive for thousands of years. Plutonium can also be used for nuclear weapons production so security is a concern as well.
