Demolitions crew uses napalm on New Carissa A team of Navy demolition experts attempted to avoid further release of oil by burning off oil that remained in the grouded freighter's bunkers. Their first attempt was unsuccessful. The New Carissa ran aground after setting anchor too close to shore. The ship was empty but was carrying 400 thousand gallons of diesel and bunker fuel. An estimated 40 thousand gallons spilled, and rough weather drove much of the oil onto six miles of sandy beach near the town of North Bend on the Oregon coast.
