American Alligator at Anahuac NWR Located on the northeastern end of Galveston Bay, Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge provides coastal marsh habitat for birds, mammals and reptiles like this American Alligator. Once nearly extirpated due to the poaching for the leather trade, alligators are one of the Endangered Species Act's success stories. Alligators generally range in length from six to fifteen feet and are found in freshwater marshes, rivers, swamps, canals and even the occasional swimming pool.
