Endangered St. Lucia Parrot In 1979, the parrot was designated the National Bird, and captive breeding programs were initiated. The St. Lucia Forestry and Lands Department has set aside areas of the rainforest as preserves and has supported island-wide education programs. Although the parrots remain highly endangered, their numbers have tripled (to approximately 300) since the early 1970's. The St. Lucia Parrot is a critically endangered species that is found only on the forested mountain slopes of St. Lucia.
