Harlequin Duck engulfed by crashing wave Adult male Harlequin Duck is almost engulfed by a crashing wave. Harlequin Ducks are an endangered species that live in one of the most violent habitats on earth. As a result, these small ducks suffer the highest recorded incidence of healed broken bones ever found in any species. Diving where the waves crash into the rocks of the Pacific shoreline, Harequin Ducks have access to a remarkably rich foodsource of intertidal animals. But the ducks must accurately time the crashing waves to avoid serious injury. Harlequin Ducks migrate inland to nest in hollow trees and raise their young on fast flowing mountain streams.
