Sandhill Crane Count Scheduled for April 21 The annual Midwest Sandhill Crane Count is usually scheduled for about April 21. Sandhill Cranes gather at several migratory stopovers on the Great Plains. In early spring, more than a quarter of a million cranes can congregate on the Platte River in Nebraska. Sandhill Cranes nesting in the northern US and Canada migrate long distances to reach their nesting grounds: some cross the Bering Straits every fall and winter on their way to Siberia.
