Loggerhead Shrike - - (Lanius ludovicianus)

Photography from Stockpix.com

Image # 130

Loggerhead Shrike with distant mountains and clouds

Loggerhead Shrike perching, USA, Jueco Tanks State Park near El Paso, Texas. A Loggerhead Shrike perches on a mesquite branch. Loggerhead Shrikes are listed as endangered in several eastern states. In Europe shikes are called butcherbirds due to their habbit of impaling prey on thorns, barbed wire fences or any sharp branch handy. If they are not hungry at the moment they use the impalement as a short term food cache.
