Burrowing Owl Preening Young Burrowing Owls feed on a variety of small mammals, amphibians and insects. This mother owl has been feeding frog legs to her young. Although they can excavate their own nests or burrows, burrowing owls also borrow burrows abandoned by armadillos, ground squirrels and prairie dogs. These small birds of prey once ranged widely across the western United States and Florida, but they are now threatened or endangered in some of their former range. They have attempted to compensate for habitat loss by nesting in cemeteries, road rights-of-ways, golf courses, and vacant lots.
