Restoring the Everglades

flock taking flight from water Brown Pelicans were an unintended target of DDT and other pesticides. Eggs laid by females were often too thin to be viable, and by 1970, with the exception of a few colonies in Florida, Brown Pelicans had disappeared from the United States. With the banning of DDT, populations recovered, and soaring Brown Pelicans can now commonly be seen on the western and southeastern US coasts.
